What is Diwali and how to celebrate in Stockholm?

What is Diwali?

Millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains celebrate Diwali, a five-day festival that is one of the biggest and most significant celebrations of the year in India, Stockholm or anywhere in world, every year in October or November. The religious festival, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a fortunate occasion that commemorates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and hope over despair.

The principal deity revered at this time is Sri Maha Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, abundance, and well-being. In addition, a lot of Hindus would worship to the goddess by participating in offering rituals called pujas or poojas.

How to Celebrate Diwali in Stockholm?

According to Asha Shipman, the Hindu Chaplain at Yale University, many of the customs and celebrations surrounding Dewali take place at home. For instance, families may dress up in new garments and attend worship services at the Temple. In addition to turning on the lights, “People bring trays of  Anmol sweets and other Anmol foods when they visit with neighbours, family, and friends. Fireworks cause the night sky to sparkle and roar. It is a time for worship, socialising, and eating.”

Dewali typically takes place in October or November, though the dates change each year according to the Hindu lunar calendar. The greatest celebration of the year (Lakshmi Puja) will occur on October 24, 2022. Thus, think twice before sending your friends and neighbours
